The Map of Love by Ahdaf Soueif My rating: 5 of 5 stars Good books never die. I only read this novel last year but was utterly spell-bound from the start. It is a literary time-shift historical romance (my own genre) and is a very passionate love story. Lady Anna Winterbourne travelled to Egypt in 1900 and fell in love with the country and with a leading political figure. One hundred years later, her descendant Isobel Parkman, an American divorcee, makes the same journey. She wants to unravel Anna’s story but in the process she discovers her own love story, and comes up against the same problems and prejudices Anna had encountered a century ago. The story is told by Isobel’s cousin from the Egyptian side of the family. I discovered a story so exquisitely moving when I reached the end I began again at the beginning, reluctant to lose the spell Ahdaf Soueif’s narrative had cast over me. It is not an easy-read, yet is so rich in historical detail, full of vibrant beauty and told with grace and love. Definitely a five star rating from me and highly recommended.
